Postoperative Streptococcus constellatus Bacteremia in a 75-Year-Old Patient with Pyometra: A Case Report

[b]BACKGROUND[/b] Pyometra is an accumulation of pus in the uterine cavity. It rare general population but more common elderly women. If diagnosed early stage, life-threating conditions may be avoided. The most etiological microorganisms pyometra are [i]Escherichia coli[/i], [i]Bacteroides[/i] species, [i]Staphylococci[/i] (eg, epidermidis) and [i]Streptococci[/i]. Occasionally, atypical bacteria cause. [b]CASE REPORT[/b] We present case a 75-year-old woman, with multiple risk factors, admitted to Gynecology Department 15-day history yellowish-brown vaginal discharge. Because rapid enlargement cavity, patient underwent endometrial curettage. Three hours after surgery, she developed high-grade fever, [i]Streptococcus constellatus[/i] was isolated her blood cultures. A specific antibiotic therapy administered for total 14 days, resulting complete resolution infection. [b]CONCLUSIONS[/b] This report describes bacteremia caused by constellatus[/i], that resulted from pyometra. classic triad symptoms (postmenopausal bleeding, discharge, lower abdominal pain) helpful diagnosis; however, 50% patients asymptomatic. An recognition condition important avoid risky consequences, such as perforation uterus itself.
